Red Letter Racing is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Lakey as trainer. Michael Lakey will assist Red Letter Racing in the purchase of yearlings and will play an integral role in their early education until eventually taking the yearlings under his full-time care. "Michael will be attending the sales with us and assisting in the purchase of our horses. It's important to us that we have horses our trainer is excited to train and Michael's opinion will play a big role in choosing the right horse's for Red Letter Racing's owners. We noticed over the years that whenever a Michael Lakey trained horse steps onto the track they are very professional and it excites us that Red Letter Racing horses will be given the chance to be educated by a great horsemen." said Red Letter Racing's Racing Manager, Nathan Crawford.
The appointment of Michael Lakey is a significant moment for Red Letter Racing with Crawford stating "It's huge for us to have Michael onboard. Michael is the quiet achiever in Brisbane racing, he has a strike rate equal to anyone in the state even though he trains a small team. Michael's ability to consistently train winners was not lost on us when it came to appointing a trainer and we are excited to work with Michael into the future." Perhaps, a lesser-known fact about Michael Lakey is that he spent many years riding trackwork for Hall Of Fame trainer, Colin Hayes. "There isn't too many people around that can say they got the chance to ride trackwork under the great Colin Hayes. Mr Hayes had a stable full of superstars in the time Michael spent there so Michael knows what a good horse feels like and how to get a horse to reach it's full potential" said Crawford. Lakey has had an invaluable education which has seen him go on to forge a succesful career as a trainer in his own right since moving back to his hometown of Brisbane. "Just about every week Michael is training winners. It's testament to his ability that he can train a small stable, have consistent winners and also have one or two in the stable with the ability to compete in some of the best races around."
Another dimension to Michael is the fact that he has successfully travelled horse's interstate, as evident when the Lakey trained, Risk Aversion travelled to Sydney and beat all rivals except champion mare, Red Tracer. "I remember as purely a racing fan and a fan of Risk Aversion when she went down to Sydney that day. She ran a huge race and for a moment there it looked as though she had won! I think we all now know how good you have to be to run a nose to that champion mare. It was a good effort from Michael to travel her down there and have her cherry ripe that day" stated Crawford. Michael takes a hands on approach to training his horse's and regularly rides the horse's himself to see exactly how they are progressing. Red Letter Racing believe Michael has the training ability and the knowledge to take Red Letter Racing to the highest level. "Michael rides a fair bit of trackwork himself which is a great asset for Red Letter Racing. Michael can jump on their back himself and get a feel for exactly how they are going and what they need. Michael's Deagon base gives him the option of taking his horse's to Sandgate beach regularly. I've never met a horse that didn't love the beach and they all seem to grow a leg after a bit of beach work. All of these attributes will give Red Letter Racing's horse's the greatest chance to compete at their very best every time they step onto the track and we are excited to have Michael onboard. He is a great trainer and more importantly a fantastic bloke and we look forward to celebrating plenty of wins with him in the future."
