I took some time to catch up with Michael Lakey to get the latest with a few of the stable stars and to see how things are travelling with ‘Team Lakey’.
Master Fibba won at Eagle Farm on Wednesday and I asked if they could pick up another win with Telesto Warrior who is in Saturday because I thought his last run was a lot better than it looks on paper. “I thought two of his last three runs were good. He steps up to a mile this time and has a bad gate. Even though there only looks moderate pace I don’t think we have many options but to go back and ride him the same way to see if he runs out the mile.” Lakey said.
Michael also said that the horses’ record may not look that hot but he has won on a wet track and that the horse looks great leading into the race, so I’d suggest he is some hope.
The stable star is Risk Aversion who most followers of the site would know I simply love! She is such an honest mare who looks to have untapped potential at the moment. Michael said we would see her soon. “April 7th, in a fillies and mares race that day. She is ticking over well, there were no fillies and mare races after her last start so she had 10 days off after that.”
It will be a good training effort to freshen her up and have her winning but Lakey is the man for the job and she is a super mare. The Brisbane trainer has done a great job with her and it all comes through patience. Sometimes as a trainer or owner you can get carried away and go to the well far too often, but that is never the case with Michael and he does a great job for his owners.
On a sad note Ice Crème who looked very promising has had a set back and has been forced to the paddock.
Beau Appo is also involved with the team now and works under Michael. The boss is very happy with the up and coming jockey and said there has been other good reports from other trainers and that Beau has a great attitude towards his job. I believe he has ridden in some trials now and I’m sure he has a very bright future in the racing game!
